چکیده

The nucleus of comet C/1996 J1, whose duplicity was first detected in early May 1997, ∼ 4 months after perihelion, is found to have split nontidally∼ 70 days before perihelion at 1.65 AU from the Sun. The secondary nucleus, discovered when in outburst and subsequently observed for 8 2 months, had separated from the primary nucleus at a rate of 1.7 m/s and drifted away from it with a radial nongravitational deceleration of ∼31 × 10−5 the Sun’s attraction, typical for the shortlived companions. At the time of splitting, this dynamically new comet was near conjunction with the Sun and therefore unobservable from Earth. In late 1997 and early 1998, when last seen, the companion was > ∼100 times fainter relative to the primary component than it had been when first reported.

Are there a“Hale” and a“Bopp” in comet Hale-Bopp?

Comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp was observed with the adaptive optics system adonis on the ESO 3.6 m telescope at La Silla, Chile, through the broadband J, H, K, SK (Short K) filters on 6 November 1997 and 15 January 1998. After processing of the images using different restoration techniques, the maximum brightness in the coma appeared as a double peak. The separation between the two components was 0...

A 2 1 / 2 D thermodynamic model of cometary nuclei I . Application

A 2 2 dimensional model of cometary nuclei is presented. The comet is considered as a porous ice-dust medium. Heat and gas diffusion between the surface and the inner part of the nucleus is considered. Going beyond models published so far, this work takes into account nucleus rotation and a two dimensional resolution of the diffusion equations, including a gas diffusion theory derived from the ...

Ion trap mass spectrometry on a comet nucleus: the Ptolemy instrument and the Rosetta space mission.

In May 2014, the Rosetta spacecraft is scheduled to rendezvous with the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko ('67P'). One of the instruments on board the 'Lander' which will descend on to the surface of the comet is a miniaturised GC/MS system that incorporates an ion trap mass spectrometer, specially developed for isotope ratio analysis. This article describes the development and optimisation of the io...

Telescope Observations of the Nucleus of Comet 103 P / Hartley 2

We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) 22-μm peakup array to observe thermal emission from the nucleus and trail of comet 103P/Hartley 2, the target of NASA’s Deep Impact Extended Investigation (DIXI). The comet was observed on UT 2008 August 12 and 13, while 5.5 AU from the Sun. We obtained two 200 frame sets of photometric imaging over a 2.7 hr period. To within ...

Evolution of Comet Nucleus Rotation

The secular evolution of comet nucleus rotation states subject to outgassing torques is studied. The dynamical model assumes that the nucleus inertia ellipsoid is axially symmetric. The outgassing torques acting on the surface are modeled using standard cometary activity formulae. The general rotational equations of motion are derived and separately averaged over the fast rotational dynamics te...
